HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYOFF NOTEBOOK

A pair of football legacies at Lake Travis

Saturday, December 22, 2007

By Danny Davis, Corrie MacLaggan

If seeing a Robinson make plays at Lake Travis seems familiar, it's because it probably is. Senior defensive back Sean Robinson is the younger brother of former Cavaliers great Fred Robinson.

Fred Robinson starred as a wide receiver at Lake Travis, hauling in 84 passes for 1,496 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2005, when he was named All-Central Texas.

His little brother isn't doing too badly himself, grabbing his first interception of the season in last week's state semifinal win over Dayton.

Robinson also has 42 tackles this year as well as a defensive touchdown, an 80-yard fumble return against Westlake on Sept. 7.

Lake Travis kicker Thomas Rebold, meanwhile, is the son of former Reagan great Dale Rebold, who starred at quarterback on Reagan's 1967 Class 4A state title team.

Today's Lake Travis-Highland Park game, meanwhile, kicks off at 2 p.m. today at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco. Statewide pairings had reported the game as a 1:30 p.m. kickoff for most of the week.

Class 5A title games may stay together

A plan to keep the Class 5A championship games at the same site may soon get a four-year extension. The UIL's legislative council has authorized athletic officials to pursue a set of two-year agreements, preferably with the cities of Houston and Dallas.

The original idea behind holding the 5A games at the same site involved a possible rotation between San Antonio's Alamodome, Houston's Reliant Stadium and Irving's Texas Stadium. The new Cowboys stadium in Arlington also could come into play.

However, the UIL's plan seems to disagree with the viewpoints of the Texas High School Coaches Association, who wants to go back to a system that would allow the championship game coaches to settle the championship game site.

"Since (coaches) are the ones that are doing the battling and their fans are the ones doing the traveling, the more control coaches have over the game, the better," Converse Judson coach Jim Rackley told the San Antonio Express-News.

Title game spawns friendly political bet

Championship game fever has reached the state capitol.

State Reps. Valinda Bolton, D-Austin, and Dan Branch, R-Dallas, have a friendly wager based on the outcome of today's Class 4A Division II title game between Lake Travis and Highland Park. Both politicians represent areas that are home to the competing high schools.

Should Lake Travis win, Branch will have to wear a Cavalier hat with a plume. If the Highland Park Scots emerge victorious, Bolton will sport a kilt for a day.

"They're the best," a confident Bolton said. "It's Lake Travis. They're awesome."
